PS3 40 GB Backward Compatibility goes AWOL
MiA?
The welcome news of an entry level PS3 was warmly welcome at the end of last week. However the announcement seemed to raise as many questions as it answered. In particular was the issue of the cheaper console’s lack of backwards compatibility. Whilst things are still a little grey, it seems from what we have managed to dredge up that even the software emulation of the newer PS3’s required some hardware thingamabobs to work.
SCEE managing director Ray Maguire recently stated that Sony will use the money it previously spent on backwards compatibility to invest in new games. "It was a big decision, and we know it is a very emotive subject as lots of people think that backwards compatibility is high on the agenda and yet few really use it."
Not sure how close to reality this statement is, here at PlayTM towers we’ve really appreciated being able to play our old games without having to haul out another box when we wanted to fire them up. We were also looking forward to Sony’s promised incremental improvement of this backward compatibility through its updates. With them cutting back on this, does that mean an end to them filling in the PS2 gaps in their emulation? Only time will tell.
We suspect that there is still more to discover on this topic, and as usual we’ll be the first to tell you when we sniff out any more tit bits.

The reason they dropped backward compatibility is every simple one. Most people couldn't care less about it. Only a compete 'tard would refuse to buy a console because it doesn't play your old games. Some people might want it but if they say this is a deal breaker they are lying, probably own a 360 and never had any intention of getting a PS3 in the first place.
I use the backwards compatibility on my PS3. Didn't own a PS2 but really wanted to play God of War 2 and Final Fantasy (most recent PS2 one!!). I for one am glad for the backwards compatibility but it certainly wouldn't have been a deal breaker... after all you buy the new consoles primarily for new games, right?
I had a ps2 three years ago to play gran turismo 1&2. Once beat I sold it and haven't looked back since, till now. Now, I want to play GT3 but I also want to have PS3, so I guess I'll just have to get the 60 or 80gb model.
Mine is going back tomorrow... backwards compatibility was the sale point. When you have 50 ps2 games and alot of great ps1 titles with old school games why should we have to rebuy these titles in ps3 version on a greatest hits disk. Sony screwed the pooch on this one.... I see Wii in my future and I'll get my ps2 console repaired. GH, GH2 contolers aren't campatible anyways on any ps3. I hate buying new when the old should work just as well.
Oh well, either Sony will choose to release an emulator for PS3 through PS Store (which will most likely happen late 2008-2008 I guarantee it like they did for the PS2 System Data) Or im gonna have to rely on Hackers to enable software emulation and play games that way. Too expensive to cash out for PS3 games right now.
we should buy the old consoles because you can get them for as much as a PS3 game goes for nowdays, plus you'll have the whole PS trilogy in Acctual forum, If you like to collect;)
