Playstation 3 backward (compatible)

SCE boss reveals...

The Register is today reporting on news from Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun, which recently questioned Sony Computer Entertainment boss Ken Kutaragi on the Playstation 3. Apparently, it's now official that the PS3 will be totally backward compatible with the PS2, and, thusly the PSone. This will be achieved through emulation software rather than hardware. As the PS2 was in supporting PSone games.

Kutaragi explained that this decision was based upon "security"; the system offering consumers a "sense of insurance" because it supports older games and can play DVDs, too.

This trend that was started by the PS2 may well be continued by Microsoft in the next Xbox incarnation - though experts suggest perfect compatibility, especially in some titles, may be hampered by Redmond's move to use ATI graphics hardware over NVIDIA's. More as we get it.
