Wii Sports is best selling game "ever"
Bold claim for Wii's killer app
A new report dramatically claims that Nintendo's Wii Sports is already the best selling game of all time, topping Nintendo's former sales leader Super Mario Bros.
The statisticians over VGChartz claim that the Wii launch title is now the number one game ever released, the sports-themed compilation shifting 40.52 million units since the Wii's debut in November 2006.
Wii Sports is of course bundled with the console in several regions, although it doesn't come with the system automatically in Japan.
Super Mario Bros has sold just over 40 million copies, according to the chart compilers, with their top ten dominated by the Big N for the most part.
Nintendo have yet to confirm Wii Sports' new status.

I wonder how many it would have sold if it wasnt bundled with the console. Probably not many.
I queried this, and would have put money on the GameBoy version of Tetris being #1, but it seems I'm wrong.
These VGChartz characters may not be spot on, but I think we're right to report this as it is significant - almost all the other titles in the top 10 are almost a decade old. Impressive numbers.
That's where you are wrong. While the title does sell as a separate title in some countries, not even Nintendo claims it as a "top seller" because it comes bundled in some of the world's largest markets. To claim this is the best seller is miselading and, frankly, incorrect.
well, not completely incorrect. Remember 10-20 years ago people could not download pirated games, but now, they can. So, the purpose of best selling game is to evaluate most popular game of all time. I'm willing to bet that the pirated copy of this game, while impossible to count, would account for a much higher number of actual players than its sales.
