US ready for Wii price cut?
Retail chief says flagging sales need a push
While the price of the Wii console might be on the up in the UK, it seems other regions, including North America, could be getting a Wii console price cut in the not too distant future.
Speaking to CNBC, Gamestop boss Dan DeMatteo said that a price cut in the US might be essential, if sales of the console continue to fall.
"I think [demand for] the Wii could slow down to the extent that Nintendo may want to cut the price," the exec conceded.
"Nintendo has it within its arsenal to do that. The component costs have come down considerably. They used to break even on the Wii, but now they're making a considerable margin."
The PS2 recently got a price cut from Sony, but DeMatteo said the move came rather too late and "really wasn't worth doing".
He said that "If they'd done it earlier, publishers probably would have kept making games for the PS2, but once they've stopped, they've stopped."
More on all this soon.
