Latest NPD figures see US sales drop
Analyst calls for calm
As had been previously predicted by those in the know, US game sales dropped a whopping 17 percent in April, over the same month in 2008. Sales of 1.03 billion USD were recorded, a big drop from the 1.24 billion USD the previous year offered.
Hardware was down 8 percent, peripherals were down 15 percent, but software plummeted a sizable 23 percent - according to latest numbers from the NPD Group.
"While April sales might appear soft on the surface, it's important to remember that April is being compared against a month (April 2008) that realized nearly 50 percent growth over April 2007," offered NPD analyst Anita Frazier.
"This year's performance still represents the second-best performance for the industry in the month of April, besting April 2007, which is the previous second-place holder, by 26 percent.
"Given how strong the growth was in the industry last year, there are still some months ahead where year-over-year comparisons may be difficult, but May should be an easier comparison than the last two months have been."
The DS was last month's best selling system stateside, topping sales of 1.04 million, followed by the Wii on 340,000, the Xbox 360 on 175,000, the PS3 on 172,000 and the PSP on 116,000.
Wii Fit and Pokemon Platinum DS were comfortably the month's best selling games.
