PS3 is too complicated - Valve

Developer interested in gaming not technology

Speaking about why Valve have so far opted to dodge in-house PS3 development, we're told that Sony's platform is simply too complicated, the studio focussing on 'experiences' instead.

"The PC and the 360 are just more straightforward," Tom Leonard told Loot Ninja. "We can focus on what we want to do, which is make game experiences, instead of sweating bullets over obscure architectural decisions they make with their platform.

"I didn't come into this business in the 90s because of some technical fetish. I came in because I wanted to give people experiences that made them have fun."

EA have handled some PS3 ports for Valve in the past, but these have often failed to live up to expectations, generally speaking.

In other words Valve are lazy devs that like working on simple PC architecture with no interest in pushing boundaries or moving the industry forward. Seems like their company motto is "minium effort - maximum profit".

It's also funny how other devs manage to program for PS3 with no problem at all, is it a coincidence then that they are run by one of the biggest (in more ways than one) 360 fanboys in the industry?

Maybe if they put a bit more effort into their work they wouldn't have to release another 'improved' version of Left 4 Dead so soon after the release of the original.

Way to lose friends and alienate people Valve...

Well Mr PS3Owner, looks like Valve aren't the only ones with issues with the PS3 - http://play.tm/news/25078/activision-offer-prototype-ps3-help/

The PS2 was also considered a difficult system to write for. But they didn't bitch so much because Sony was in first place then.

The thing that's coming out of this all now is that the 360 is a dead end for development while the PS3 still has a ton of room to improve.

The 360 has already been "maxed out" halfway into it's supposed life-cycle. http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/10/ea-exec-360-has-already-been-maxed-out/

Look to Project Natal for proof. Project Natal is doing all of it's processor intensive work in the box that contains the camera, not in the 360.

Hey PC Owner. That issue has nothing to do with writing the games, that's Activision not reading how to set up their installation software correctly.

It's also the exact same issue that came up with Ratchet and Clank. Easy, simple workaround, if it happens to you at all. The problem here was that the Activision devs didn't read their instructions properly.

And, PS3Owner, you're completely correct, Valve is made up of a bunch of lazy half-assed devs with no clue what it takes to push the envelope.

No one wants to develop for a system that few people have anyways...
