The Chinese government have this week confirmed that the practice of gold farming has been officially banned in the MMO-mad country.

The trade could be worth up to 150 million USD a year, but no more, says InformationWeek, who also note that some 300 million internet users could be impacted in one way or another.

The vast majority of gold farmers are reported to be based in China, and the trade is big business for some firms - who provide in-game currency at a premium for Western players of titles like World of Warcraft.

We'll keep you posted on the fall out from this legislation.
