PS3 could emulate PS2 games using software

Sony prepare new Cell update?

Word in today has it that Sony have patented a new system that will allow the firm to emulate the PS2 console's Emotion Engine using the PS3's Cell processor.

To you and me this could mean the return of complete backwards compatibility, allowing all PS3 systems to play PS2 titles without the need for fancy hardware changes.

If Sony can pull it off this move it would be a major PR boost, while rumour has it that the console will get a price cut later this year, ahead of a possible PS3 Slimline SKU launch - and some major firmware enhancements in general.

More PS3 chit-chat as we get it. Thanks VG247.

This is nothing new and is in no way indicative of the return of BC. There's nothing in this patent about emulating the GC which means there's no progress towards software BC.

The Pal PS3 was launched with EE emulation, so this patent is newsworthy only in the fact it's taken Sony years to formally get it. My personal take is this is nothing but PR spin from a company that has nothing to offer but vapour.

To me this sounds like a good idea becuase i own a ps2 and tons of games

and have been not wanting to buy a ps3 because of the questions of backward compatability

the only problem i can see with it is some of the ps2 online titles that have survived and still have servers to play on may not be compatable with on a ps3 with backward compataility and this is the same for any extra ps2 hardware people may have as well
because i see that sony would still want people buying new extras
and how much is this software emulation going to cost? or will people buying ps3 get it bundeled with it? by some kind game shop as i dont see sony making it free at all
