We've already heard that Burnout developers Criterion are behind the next-next iteration of the Need for Speed series, and it sounds as if the British game maker are taking things back to basics.

Criterion designer Alex Ward offered the following via Twitter: "'Red lining it all the way and making it pay' - a return to the original 3DO version of The Need for Speed."

The developer's involvement in the racer's revival has been rumoured for some months, and was in fact confirmed by EA chief John Riccitiello last month.

A 'revolution' of the series is promised, although given that we've another Need for Speed title due out first, we're unsure what all this news means for the Black Box title due out this autumn.

More Need for Speed as we get it.
