NPD sees US PlayStation 3 sales up in August
But overall sales are down on 2008
The latest NPD figures have been released in the USA, the DS once again leading for the month of August, while PS3 sales were up some 72 percent over July's numbers.
The DS leads with sales of 553,000 units, the Wii second with 277,000. Third was the Xbox 360 with 215,000, the PS3 an improved fourth with 210,000 consoles sold - despite the price cut and the PS3 Slim only arriving at the end of the month.
The PSP handheld is next on the chart with 140,000 consoles sold, followed by the PS2 on 106,000.
Indeed, August's numbers show a marked improvement on July's - the PS2 the only console not to enjoy a sales boost.
Despite the US hardware picture having improved a tad, year-on-year sales are still down some 16 percent on 2008's totals; the games industry reflecting the overall economic uncertainty striking North America.
Still, with PS3 and Xbox 360 price cuts likely to play a full role in September's numbers, coupled with a raft of new, big name releases - the numbers could be set for a dramatic improvement.
