Final Fantasy XIII offers new character system
Upcoming series installment ditches character levels
Square Enix is debuting an altered character growth system for the upcoming Final Fantasy XIII. In the new system, your character will no longer be ranked on a level basis. Rather, it appears you will 'buy' new skills as you go.
The new system, as reported by Andriasang, is called the Crystalium system. As you defeat enemies you will earn crystal points (CP) as opposed to XP. And as opposed to leveling-up when you reach a predefined points cap, you will use your crystal points to purchase new skills and abilities which are shown on a chart in your menu screen.
As you exchange points for new talents down one branch of the chart you will open up new, more powerful abilities. This will probably follow many familiar avenues such as fire begets fira begets firaga, etc., but we're sure to see some new growth options from the system.
As a feature to using the Crystalium system, it appears we will see abilities on the chart available based on character class, such as Attacker or Defender. Exactly what is available to whom is not yet clear, but as we hear more on this we will keep you posted.
