Wii saved PS3 from Xbox 360 domination

Sony owe Nintendo one

According to a new report from DFC Intelligence, it wasn't Blu-ray that saved the PS3 from Xbox 360 domination - but rather the success of the Wii console.

Apparently, the advent of the Wii prevented the 360 becoming the 'de facto' games console, and prevented Microsoft stealing a sizeable sales lead over their rival.

"The main danger Sony faced was that the Xbox 360 would become embedded as the system of choice," offers the new report.

"Instead consumers flocked to the Nintendo Wii. The Xbox 360 had solid sales, but they have not been enough to give Microsoft anywhere near a breakout market position."

It the seems the recent PS3 price cut has also made life easier for Sony. Thanks Joystiq.

This is revisionist MS BULLSHIT!!! Everybody knew that Nintendo's toy was going to dominate. Nobody thought that the 360 would dominate except the rabid drooling xbots...

Right, so the Playstation 3 was saved from fading away into oblivion by FURTHER market competition. If anything, the Wii has hampered Sony. Instead of a head-to-head rivalry between PS3 and XBOX360, the competition was split 3 ways. That usually means the share in profits becomes less. Sorry, I dont really agree with this article.

This makes sense. A lot of people would have bought 360s if the Wii hadn't existed... it's the next closest thing (although I expect someone below will argue with this).

"Revisionist" argument is pretty fun... like it's religious!
