Sony US have revealed that a 1.5 firmware update for the new PlayStation 3 console is very nearly ready, and should be out in Japan and North America within the next few days. The update should usher in improved backwards compatibility for a number of troubled PS2 titles, as well as introducing Edy, a pre-pay card system for buying games from the PS3 Store without the need for a credit card.

The PS3 Japan website lists the 1.5 update for release on the 24th, tomorrow, though the specifics of the changes in-bound remain under wraps presently. To use Edy, currently only available in Japan (being based on the FeliCa pre-pay technology for mobile phones), gamers will need to attach a card reader to their PS3.

Korean language support will also be added by the new firmware. More on this as we get it.
