IP EXPO London 2013

I recently attended IP EXPO, the UK’s leading event for people in the IT profession, held at Earls Court 2, London.

IP EXPO is a trade show for IT professionals, and has a main trade floor which is surrounded by seminar and keynote ‘theatres’ covering all aspects of IT. Over 100 different companies have stands, including Microsoft, HP, Cisco, Draytek and many more.

The headline keynote speaker on the first day was Kevin Mitnick, who claims he can “hack any network”. He even showed us a few live demos. You can read more about Kevin here.

I also attended a few of the other seminars including one showcasing Dell’s new PowerEdge VRTX, and another by a company called Ruckus demonstrating their range of Wireless location-based tracking systems which can create ‘heatmaps’ within a building to show which areas are getting the most traffic.

Campus Party Europe London 2013

I recently attended Campus Party Europe in London which was a technology event dubbed ‘Glastonbury for geeks’, attracting around 10,000 “campuseros” (attendees) from many different countries including Spain, the Czech Republic and of course the UK.

After speaking to a few “campuseros” about their web hosting, many people had suffered issues with their hosting provider but felt they were unable to move because they had paid for 1-2 years upfront in return for a discount. Speaking from past experience in exactly the same situation, my advice would be to firstly take out a short-term monthly contract to give you time to evaluate your web host before deciding to pay for 1 or 2 years upfront (even if the discount may seem appealing!).

For those of you who might be interested in the event, here are a few pictures:

I was also handing out flyers at the event with an exclusive Jolt promo code, so well done if you were lucky enough to be given one of those!

SSD Dedicated Servers

Greetings!

Although it is Saturday and I’m working, I’m really pleased to tell you about some improvements to our recently launched UK Dedicated Servers. We’ve expanded the range and given you a greater choice in hardware options. We’ve also made SSD disks available in our UK range for the first time.

SSD disks are solid state, unlike typical mechanical disks with spinning platters. Without getting too technical, SSD disks offer faster performance than the typical SATA counterparts. They’re suited to applications / websites that have high i/o load like database driven sites (MySQL / PostgreSQL / MSSQL). Storage sizes are smaller and SSDs are more expensive to buy than their SATA counterparts, which is reflected in the pricing we charge. This said, our prices are still ultra cheap for all of our dedicateds and I’m sure you’ll find them a bargain compared to other hosts 🙂

The SSD drives we are using are the new enterprise Samsung 843 Pros. Other providers may try and include cheaper, lower quality SSDs but  for us, it is important we provide an enterprise class drive with the longevity and reliability you expect from us at Jolt. For those interested in the nitty gritty tech specs, take a look at http://hothardware.com/Reviews/Samsung-SM843-Pro-Data-Center-Series-SSD-Review/
