Getting Started: Setting Up Your First Mailbox in JCP

This guide walks you through setting up your very first email mailbox in JCP, from adding your domain through to checking your email for the first time. It’s written for anyone doing this for the first time, no technical background required.

Before you start

Within your JCP control panel. If your domain hasn’t been added to JCP yet, you’ll also need to be able to update its name servers, which is usually done through whoever you registered the domain with.

To access your control panel:

1. Sign in to your client portal with us.

2. Click the link to access JCP from the top navigation menu.

Step 1: Add your domain

If your domain is already showing in JCP, you can skip ahead to Step 2. Otherwise, go to Domains & Email and click Add a domain. Enter your domain name, for example yourcompany.com, and click Continue.

JCP will give you a set of name servers, shown above. You’ll need to update these with whoever you registered your domain through, for example GoDaddy, 123-Reg, or Namecheap. This tells the internet that Scout is now in charge of your domain’s email and website settings. If this looks a bit technical, your domain registrar’s support team can usually do this for you.

Name server changes can take anywhere from a few minutes to 24 hours to take effect. JCP checks automatically in the background and will update the domain’s status once it’s ready.

Step 2: Open the Email section

Once your domain has been added, click into it and select Email along the top of the page. This is where every mailbox for this domain lives, along with the settings you’ll need to set up email on a phone or computer.

Step 3: Create your first mailbox

Click Add email address. You’ll be asked whether this is an Account or a Forwarder. Choose Account, since a forwarder just redirects mail elsewhere without storing it in a mailbox of its own.

Give it a name, for example Jane Smith or Sales Team. This is the name people will see when this mailbox sends an email. Then choose the part of the address before the @ symbol, for example jane or sales.

You can leave the password box empty and click Generate to have Scout create a secure password for you, or type your own. Choose how much storage the mailbox needs, 5 GB is a good starting point for most people, then click Create account.

Copy the password shown on screen straight away and store it somewhere safe, such as a password manager. Scout won’t show it to you again, so if it’s lost, you’ll need to reset it instead.

Step 4: Set up the mailbox on a phone or computer

Your new mailbox is ready to use straight away. There are two easy ways to check it: through webmail, or by adding it to an email app.

Webmail is the simplest option and needs no setup. Just open the webmail address shown on the Email page in a browser and sign in with the email address and password. https://webmail.layerip.com is the address you’ll need to access webmail directly.

To use Outlook, Apple Mail, or a phone’s built in mail app instead, add a new account using the incoming and outgoing server details shown on the Email page. These settings are the same for every mailbox on the domain.

That’s it, your first mailbox is up and running. From here, take a look at our other guides for creating additional mailboxes, resetting passwords, and setting up email forwarding.
