Identifying and resolving database connection error from exhausted hosting storage

A website may display a database connection error when the hosting account has run out of available storage. In such situation, the database service itself may still be running, but the site cannot connect or operate correctly until disk space is freed.

Symptoms

  • You see a message on the website such as “Error establishing a database connection”.
  • The database service (MySql) seems to be running or working
  • Actions in Jolt Control Panel related to the database, such as changing the database user password, may fails or returns an error that the change was not accepted by the server.
  • No recent modifications to your database credentials (dbname, dbuser or dbpassword) prior to the issue.

Solution

  1. Check if the hosting account is at or near its storage limit in Jolt Control Panel.
  2. Identify large or redundant files, such as old backups, archives, or temporary files stored within the account.
  3. Remove unnecessary files to free up space.
  4. Once storage has been released, test the website again. The site should reconnect and load normally if storage exhaustion was the cause.
  5. If you cannot safely remove files yourself, contact support via www.jolt.co.uk/support/ and ask for help reviewing disk usage. Include the affected domain and mention the database connection error.
