How to Request DNS Changes

Need to point your domain to a new server? If we manage your DNS, our support team can make the change for you. Here’s exactly what you need to do.

You might need a DNS change if:

  • A new hosting provider or developer asked you to point your domain elsewhere
  • You’re moving a website to a third-party server
  • You’re unsure whether we manage your DNS or what information to provide

Step 1: Get the DNS Details From Your New Provider

Before contacting us, ask your new provider for the exact DNS records they need. You’ll need three key pieces of information:

  • Record Type — Usually A, CNAME, MX, or TXT
  • Name/Host — The subdomain or hostname (e.g., www, mail, or leave blank for root domain)
  • Value/Target — The destination IP address, hostname, or other value they specify
  • TTL (optional) — Time to live, if they specify one

Don’t guess or ask us what these should be—your new provider must give you the exact values. Without them, the update can’t be done accurately.

Step 2: Contact Support With the Details

Once you have the information, contact us via www.jolt.co.uk/support/ or email support@jolt.co.uk with:

Preferred format:

Type: [record type]
Name/Host: [subdomain or hostname]
Value/Target: [destination IP address or hostname]
TTL: [if supplied]
Change window: [preferred date/time, if needed]

Example:

Type: A
Name/Host: www
Value/Target: 192.0.2.123
TTL: 3600
Change window: Tonight after 9 PM

If you’re updating multiple records, clearly state whether they should all change at the same time.

Step 3: Timing

Once we have the details, the DNS change itself is usually quick. But then DNS propagation kicks in—public DNS caches around the world need time to refresh.

Allow several hours for the change to fully propagate to all users.

Pro tip: If possible, schedule DNS changes outside business hours to reduce the risk of disruption while propagation happens.

Once we receive your request with the correct DNS values, we’ll update the records on your behalf.
